A Rich Cultural Heritage

Situated on the north bank of the Andreafsky River, just half a mile from its union with the Yukon River, lies the Native village of St. Mary's. Located approximately 450 miles west-northwest of Anchorage, this vibrant community is home to the Algaaciq and Andreafsky Yupik tribal communities. Originally, St. Mary's incorporated as a city in 1967, while Andreafsky initially chose to maintain tribal jurisdiction. However, in 1980, these communities were unified under the governance of the City of St. Mary's.

Our Diverse Shareholder Base

Reflecting the broader community of St. Mary's, SMNC boasts a diverse shareholder base. Roughly one-third of our shareholders reside in St. Mary's, another third in Anchorage, and the remaining third elsewhere. In a strategic move to expand and diversify our family of companies, SMNC inaugurated a new office in Anchorage in 2012. This strategic placement positions us in the heart of Alaska's bustling business center, facilitating growth and fostering new opportunities.

The Corporation

SMNC traces its origins to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), passed on December 18, 1971. Established as a for-profit entity, SMNC initially comprised 297 original shareholders, each holding 100 shares. Recognizing the need to include descendants born after ANCSA, the SMNC Board of Directors introduced a new class of stock in 1986. This initiative led to the creation of Yunerrait Corporation, a non-profit organization endowed with three voting shares.

SMNC Properties

From our home offices in Anchorage, Alaska, we can effectively serve clients all over the Continental United States. Our satellite office in Oahu, Hawaii, is dedicated to serving our customers in Hawaii and the Pacific. We are capable of projects in excess of $300 million through our existing SBA approved joint venture with our mentor.
